Mortgage Rates End Choppy Week Near Best Levels
Friday, January 29th, 2010pPosted To: a href=”/consumer_rates/”Mortgage Rate Watch/a/pMortgage rates ended last week at their best levels since early December. Then rates rose on Monday, gained back lost ground on Tuesday only to give back those improvements after the FOMC statement on Wednesday, weakness then extend over into Thursday. This left the par 30 year fixed mortgage rate in the 4.875 to 5.125 range. Today, all eyes were on the release of Advance 4th Quarter GDP. At 8:30 am the US Department of Commerce released the advance read on 4th quarter Gross Domestic Product. This is the first of three 4th Quarter GDP release, todayrsquo;s report will be revised in February and March. Dec. and Jan. Months In Review: By The Charts
Friday, January 29th, 2010pPosted To: a href=”/mortgage_rates/blog/”MBS Commentary/a/pLet#39;s try something a little different for the weekend… No novel tonight. Lock/Float considerations were well discussed earlier in the day. But when we move like we did today, I get the urge to psychoanalyze the charts. So here#39;s a tale of 9 charts, about which I#39;ll say little if anything other than what#39;s already been written on the them. Use the comments section to discuss what sticks out to you and we#39;ll revisit these long term trends next week. But first, price action over the last 2 days at least deserves it#39;s own chart! So, we see bonds seemingly tail off with no particular quot;missionquot; evident, but when we zoom out to a monthly view, we see the first argument against the quot;random walkquot; lower in yield So not only are MBS (in green) and Tsy#39;s…(a href=”http://www.mortgagenewsdaily.com/mortgage_rates/blog/132338.aspx”read more/a)pdiv style=”background-color:#D4EDC9;border:1px solid #BDD4B3;padding:3px 5px 3px 6px; color:#000000;font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:12px;”strongForward this article via email:/strongnbsp;nbsp;a href=”http://www.mortgagenewsdaily.com/channels/132338/3/forward.aspx” style=”color:#3333CC;”Send a copy of this story/a to someone you know that may want to read it./div/pimg src=”http://www.mortgagenewsdaily.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=132338″ width=”1″ height=”1″

Planning for the Slowdown; Texas Ratio Update; MGIC Honoring Claims; Putting Funds to Work
Friday, January 29th, 2010pPosted To: a href=”/garrett_watts/”The Garrett Watts Report/a/pSecurities firm Keefe, Bruyette amp; Woods has identified 393 banks with Texas ratios greater than 100%. If we assume that 75% of them will fail (our number, not Keefersquo;s), that would represent $141 billion in assets, and assuming a 25% loss ratio (our number, not theirs), this would cost the FDIC $35 billion. If yoursquo;re worried that yoursquo;ll be required to own 5% of every loan you sell, find something else to worry about. Congress is not going to allow something that would kill the housing recoveryhellip;.. and housing itself. Even if it did get passed, we guarantee you that some Wall Street firm would figure out how to securitize the 5% pieces. Private funds would buy them, and even if they got bought at a discount, that would just be factored into what the borrower pays….(a href=”http://www.mortgagenewsdaily.com/garrett_watts/132178.aspx”read more/a)pdiv style=”background-color:#D4EDC9;border:1px solid #BDD4B3;padding:3px 5px 3px 6px; color:#000000;font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:12px;”strongForward this article via email:/strongnbsp;nbsp;a href=”http://www.mortgagenewsdaily.com/channels/132178/3/forward.aspx” style=”color:#3333CC;”Send a copy of this story/a to someone you know that may want to read it./div/pimg src=”http://www.mortgagenewsdaily.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=132178″ width=”1″ height=”1″
New Laws Protect Distressed Consumers from Scam Artists
Friday, January 29th, 2010pPosted To: a href=”/channels/community/default.aspx”Community Commentary/a/pI originally published this story on SuretyBonds.com , but feel the current environment justifies spreading the word. Consumer complaints about debt-assistance companies have spawned tougher new laws designed to crack down on scam artists. In many states, these new laws require companies to carry surety bonds to enable repayment if they abscond with customersrsquo; money. In other cases, recent lawsuits against shady operators may inspire even stricter laws. Herersquo;s a quick look at several industry niches related to consumer debt where states have recently passed new rules: Credit counselors : In Louisiana, three out-of-state credit-repair companies were hit with ldquo;cease and desistrdquo; orders from the state attorney general after failing to post a $100,000 surety bond with the…(a href=”http://www.mortgagenewsdaily.com/channels/community/132294.aspx”read more/a)pdiv style=”background-color:#D4EDC9;border:1px solid #BDD4B3;padding:3px 5px 3px 6px; color:#000000;font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:12px;”strongForward this article via email:/strongnbsp;nbsp;a href=”http://www.mortgagenewsdaily.com/channels/132294/3/forward.aspx” style=”color:#3333CC;”Send a copy of this story/a to someone you know that may want to read it./div/pimg src=”http://www.mortgagenewsdaily.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=132294″ width=”1″ height=”1″
